After a mild autumn, a prolonged cold spell was forecast for winter 2018. Many homeowners and clearing and winter services asked themselves the same question yet again: What do we do to counter the icy surfaces?
Nature must be better protected
From year to year, the number of towns and municipalities in Germany is growing where salt-free gritting of footpaths and cycle paths is mandatory, i.e. legally prescribed. This fact is certainly also partly due to the constantly growing environmental awareness of our population. Nature is worth protecting and therefore must be protected.
Sharp-edged grit can be a real tyre killer
In winter, ice formation on footpaths and cycle paths is often only temporary. However, the grit lies on the ground until it is removed again in spring. Not every winter grit is free of negative side effects.
Hard grit is often spiky and has very sharp edges. Although this has a blunting effect on icy surfaces, it is precisely this sharp-edged, spiky grit that often causes injury to animal paws, flattens bicycle tyres, and damages floor coverings. Many bicycle dealers with workshops have their peak season in the winter time, and bicycle tyres often have to be replaced due to the severe damage caused by grit. The cyclists then talk of hard winter grit as a true "tyre killer". But pedestrians also carry the damage home with them. The hard granules settle into the coarse tread of their winter shoes, barely noticed by the people wearing them. If they enter their homes with their shoes on afterwards, this may cause damage to floor surfaces and coverings.
