Widely diverse design concepts exist for the perfect riding grounds. Nevertheless, one aim unites them all: To produce the ideal, joint-friendly surface that significantly contributes to minimising the risk of joint damage or injuries. Hence just as in sports ground construction, an expanded clay drainage layer (base course) assumes an important frostproofing function. Excess water is able to dissipate quickly. Moreover, expanded clay also absorbs a certain amount of moisture, which is released again on dry summer days. This sharply reduces dust formation.

Expanded clay is a sintered, closed granulate. When used in the drainage layer, it can – depending on the type of arena – also prevent the washing up of sand. Expanded clay is impervious to frost and stands out because of its outstanding processability. As spread or blown-in fill, expanded clay is virtually self-compacting and can be height-adjusted very well.
Expanded clay is equally suitable as a drainage or base course for both new facilities and modernisation, whether riding arenas for dressage, jumping and western or for outdoor arenas, paddocks or walking circles.
